7/4/13 - AUSTIN, Texas - An off-duty Austin police officer shot and killed a dog inside a pet store Wednesday night. Police tell KVUE News APD Officer Leslie Lyons was working security at the PetCo store near Lakeline Mall. They say a 16-year-old girl brought a pitbull on a leash into the store around 7:20 p.m.The dog got lose and attacked a maltipoo dog. After trying to separate the animals, people inside the store asked the security guard to help. She made sure no one was close to the dogs, then fired her weapon, killing the pitbull. The other dog survived and is being treated at a nearby animal hospital. Neither dog has a known history of violence. Austin police say Officer Lyons is under investigation, though APD's assistant chief says he does not believe she violated any of the department's policies regarding animals.

7/2/13 - DAYTON, Texas -- Two KHOU crews were just feet away from a Liberty County deputy when he shot and killed a dog. The Rottweiler-Mastiff mix was responsible for a deadly mauling on Monday. Deputies say the dog had been a stray until a woman in the Woodland Hills subdivision began feeding him about two weeks ago. 63-year-old Linda Oliver called authorities after the dog attacked her, but it was too late. "I love my dogs, but something like that happens to a human being, it needs to be put down," said neighbor Steve Wilson. Deputies shot at the dog named "Bruiser" at Oliver's home on Monday. Deputies say the dog charged at them and managed to escape into some nearby woods. Deputies had been actively searching for the dog ever since. Several near captures ended with the dog running off into the distance. On Tuesday night, around 6:30 p.m., it all came to an end on County Road 648. Two KHOU crews covering the story followed a deputy to that location. Less than a minute later, the dog ran down the street and deputies followed in hot pursuit. A Liberty County Deputy, crouched in a ditch, killed the animal with two shots fired from a 12-gauge shotgun. KHOU cameras rolled as the shots went off, and a deputy officially confirmed out loud that the dog was dead. "I think it's a tremendous relief off of everyone. I have gotten numerous calls from parents who have small children and small pets," said Capt. Ken DeFoor with Liberty County Sheriff's Office. DeFoor says the animal was so dangerous he left deputies with no choice. "Had he been brought down with a tranquilizer and captured, we would've still had to send his remains for rabies testing," explained Capt. DeFoor. The animal remains are now on the way to a lab. If the dog did in fact have rabies, deputies are concerned about other pets he might've come in contact with.

BAKERSFIELD-- 25-year-old Dennis Ozaeta was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison and a $420 fine for the death of 13-year-old Israel Medina. The California Highway Patrol says Medina was being pulled on his scooter by his dog when Ozaeta hit and killed both the boy and his German Shepherd, Bella, on June 24th, 2012. Ozaeta left the scene and officers later found him at his home. The Medina family says two years in prison isn't enough. "It was unfair, not enough justice,” said Connie Medina, Israel's mother. “Two years is nothing for him for taking my boy(‘s) life away. I do not think it was enough justice for him (or) for me." Investigators say Ozaeta was legally drunk at the time of the crash. He had two children in the backseat of his car and had a prior misdemeanor for hit-and-run. I could've done better as I didn't really exercise that much, mainly walking. I just ate less. No takeaway lunches at work. I ate Celery at lunch for about 6 weeks, then I got sick of it. I started to hate celery. Now I eat Mandarins or Pears for lunch and have a small cup of Greek yoghurt for breakfast. I'm still a fatty! but I am fairly happy with the result. I plan to keep going and start exercising more. I want to be under 100kg by the end of the year. Good luck to all of the other contestants. For the first time in this test, Grasshopper made use of its full navigation sensor suite with the F9-R closed loop control flight algorithms to accomplish a precision landing. Most rockets are equipped with sensors to determine position, but these sensors are generally not accurate enough to accomplish the type of precision landing necessary with Grasshopper. Previous Grasshopper tests relied on the other rocket sensors but for this test, an additional, higher accuracy sensor was in the control loop. In other words, SpaceX was directly controlling the vehicle based on new sensor readings, adding a new level of accuracy in sensing the distance between Grasshopper and the ground, enabling a more precise landing. Grasshopper is a 10-story Vertical Takeoff Vertical Landing (VTVL) vehicle designed to test the technologies needed to return a rocket back to Earth intact. While most rockets are designed to burn up on atmosphere reentry, SpaceX rockets are being designed not only to withstand reentry, but also to return to the launch pad for a vertical landing. The Grasshopper VTVL vehicle represents a critical step towards this goal. Grasshopper consists of a Falcon 9 rocket first stage tank, Merlin 1D engine, four steel and aluminum landing legs with hydraulic dampers, and a steel support structure.

The new sensor, the day-night band of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), is sensitive enough to detect the nocturnal glow produced by Earth's atmosphere and the light from a single ship in the sea. Satellites in the U.S. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program have been making observations with low-light sensors for 40 years. But the VIIRS day-night band can better detect and resolve Earth's night lights.The new, higher resolution composite image of Earth at night was released at a news conference at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco. This and other VIIRS day-night band images are providing researchers with valuable data for a wide variety of previously unseen or poorly seen events."For all the reasons that we need to see Earth during the day, we also need to see Earth at night," said Steve Miller, a researcher at NOAA's Colorado State University Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere. "Unlike humans, the Earth never sleeps." The day-night band observed Hurricane Sandy, illuminated by moonlight,making landfall over New Jersey on the evening of Oct. 29. Night images showed the widespread power outages that left millions in darkness in the wake of the storm. With its night view, VIIRS is able to detect a more complete view of storms and other weather conditions, such as fog, that are difficult to discern with infrared, or thermal, sensors. Night is also when many types of clouds begin to form. "NOAA's National Weather Service is continuing to explore the use of the day-night band," said Mitch Goldberg, program scientist for NOAA's Joint Polar Satellite System. "The very high resolution from VIIRS data will take forecasting weather events at night to a much higher level." Unlike a camera that captures a picture in one exposure, the day-night band produces an image by repeatedly scanning a scene and resolving it as millions of individual pixels. Then, the day-night band reviews the amount of light in each pixel. If it is very bright, a low-gain mode prevents the pixel from oversaturating. If the pixel is very dark, the signal is amplified. "It's like having three simultaneous low-light cameras operating at once and we pick the best of various cameras, depending on where we're looking in the scene," Miller said. The instrument can capture images on nights with or without moonlight, producing crisp views of Earth's atmosphere, land and ocean surfaces. "The night is nowhere as dark as we might think," Miller said. And with the VIIRS day-night band helping scientists to tease out information from human and natural sources of nighttime light, "we don't have to be in the dark anymore, either.""The remarkable day-night band images from Suomi NPP have impressed the scientific community and exceeded our pre-launch expectations," said James Gleason, Suomi NPP project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Dangerous waves hit Chile and Peru by reuters ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: A large swath of Chile's Pacific coast remained on alert Thursday as massive swells continued to pound the coastline due to high winds and strong tidal currents. High winds and tidal movements have combined to create swells with waves as big as 22 feet or seven meters in some parts of the South American country's coastline. Meanwhile in the Peruvian coastal city of Llo waves as big as 16 feet or five meters struck the coast. Local weather services have issued a warning saying the large swells could last through Sunday.
